Although the tools and technology available to assist translators continues to improve, it will be a very long time before machines can handle all the complexities of a language. However, used properly, the translation tools and technology currently available can play a very beneficial role in the translation process, most particularly in terms of improved quality and lower costs.
RE-USE OF PREVIOUSLY TRANSLATED MATERIAL
Generally speaking, we save all the material associated with the translations that we provide to our clients. Most translations are stored in special, client-specific databases called translation memories, each entry in the database comprising a phrase or sentence in the source language and its corresponding translation, such that it can subsequently be re-used by the translator when appropriate to do so. Re-using previously translated material in this way creates a “win-win” situation resulting in lower costs, faster delivery times and consistent use of terminology.
